Periodontal Treatments

Periodontal diseases are typically infections of the gums, which gradually destroy the support of your natural teeth. Some of them require different treatment approaches.

When is Periodontal Treatment Needed?

Often, you’ll go symptomless since infections in the bone and gums gradually destroy the support for your tooth. Periodontal treatment is needed when conditions affect the health of your gums and the jawbone regions that hold your teeth in place.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Dental plaque is the primary cause of gum disease in genetically susceptible individuals. Bacteria in the plaque will produce toxins and poisons that cause inflammation. When you prolong the irritation, your gums begin to separate from the teeth, which causes pockets to form.

Without treatment, the supporting tissue and bone that holds teeth in place will deteriorate, which leads to tooth loss. By age 45, more than 80 percent of Americans experience periodontal disease to the teeth, gum, or jawbone.

How Do You Treat/Prevent Periodontal Disease?

Treating periodontal disease provides with a more maintainable environment around your teeth and gums. We provide periodontal therapy to remove bacteria through scaling and root planing, and we pride ourselves on teaching oral hygiene to all of our patients.

By brushing and flossing daily, you’ll prevent most periodontal conditions. We recommend various treatment options depending on your conditions, limiting surgery unless absolutely necessary. We find that in most cases, the early stages of periodontal disease are best treated with non-surgical therapy.

Treatments include:

  • Grafting
  • Gingivectomy
  • Frenectomy
  • Crown lengthening
  • Pocket reduction
  • And socket preservation

Even in severe cases, non-surgical periodontal therapy is preferred over surgical therapy. Our therapy will improve the overall tissue quality, helping to limit the areas requiring surgery.
